『死者の書』とは…
稀代の民俗芸能学者であり、詩人釈迢空としても活躍した折口信夫が当麻寺に伝わる曼荼羅を織り上げた中将姫の伝説をもとに書き上げた自伝的小説。

あらすじ：平城京の都の栄える頃のこと、春の彼岸中日、二上山に日が落ちるとき藤原南家の郎女（中将姫がモデルとされる）は尊い俤びとの姿を見た。それ以来、千部写経の成就に導かれ、非業の死を遂げた滋賀津彦（大津皇子がモデルとされる）とまみえ、尊い俤びとと重なるその姿を蓮糸で曼荼羅に織り上げて行く。全てを成し遂げることで郎女は、さまよう魂を鎮め、自らも浄土へといざなわれていく。
滋賀津彦、郎女両方の世界を映画のコラージュのように構成しているだけではなく、折口本人も「書いている中に、夢の中の自分の身が、いつか、中将姫の上になっていたのであった」（『山越しの阿弥陀像の画因』）と書いており、この世とあの世、男性性と女性性が交錯している独特の世界は、著者折口の魅力もあって長く多くの読者を魅了してきました。
本プロジェクトはこの世とあの世、時空を超えてただ祈る、希うという舞踊の根源に立ち返り、折口が芸能研究から見出したものをヒントに、折口の恋を再び見つめてみようとする試みです。

Re-interpreting “The Book of the Dead”
The
Book of the Dead:
An explanation:The poet and outstanding
ethnologist’s Shinobu Orikuchi’s autobiographical novel based on the legend of
Chujo-hime, who, according to legend wove the mandalas at the Taima-dera
monastry.
Synopsis: During the period the city of
Heijyo-kyo prospered, on the spring equinox day,the noblewoman of Fujiwara
Nanke (modelled on Chujo-hime) caught sight of a ghost as the sun went down
behind Mount Futagamiyama. After that, guided by the fulfilment of the 1,000
hand-copied sutras, she kept seeing Shigatsu-hiko (modelled on Ohtsuno-miko),
who had come to a tragic end, and began weaving the ghostly shape into the
mandala with lotuses. By finishing weaving Mandala, the maiden soothed the wandering
soul and was herself guided to the Pure Land.
What has long fascinated many of Orikuchi’s
readers was not only how he re-created both Shigatsu-hiko’s and the maiden’s
story like a movie collage, but also how he depicted the unique world in which
masculinity and femininity intersect with this world and the other world. “While writing, my body was as though in a
dream, and at one stage I found myself lying on Chujo-hime, ” [He also wrote in
his essay “The cause of Yamagoshi Amida”],
This project is an attempt to seek out the
root of a dance that prays for the beyond of this world and that world, to
transcend time and space, from Orikuchi’s artistic discoveries and once again
looking at his ideal of love.
